Sometimes a tooth needs to be removed because of large cavities, trauma or crowding. This procedure is called an extraction, and it can range from a single tooth, multiple teeth or even all 4 wisdom teeth. Some extractions are straight forward, and the tooth can simply be lifted out of the gums and bone. Other extractions are more complex, and the tooth needs to be sectioned into pieces before being able to remove it. Depending on the extraction, sutures may be needed to close the area. Soluble sutures are used most often, and they dissolve on their own in 5-7 days. For multiple teeth, impacted wisdom teeth or complicated extractions, the dentist might refer the patient to an oral surgeon, whose specialty includes extractions.
